The Government has a very useful website where you can find information about official processes you need to follow when someone dies.

The Government also runs a service called ‘Tell us once’ which informs all government departments about the death on your behalf in one go including cancelling passports and driving licenses. This service is highly recommended and will save you time and stress at a difficult time. To instigate this you need to be the deceased's next of kin- related by blood or marriage-and will need to provide;

  • the date of death and national insurance number of the deceased
  • your date of birth, national insurance number and contact details (if you are next of kin)
  • contact details of the person dealing with the deceased person's estate and belongings

When you register the death the registrar will:

  • let you know if the service is available in your area
  • give you the phone number or website address
  • give you a unique reference number to use the service on-line or by phone

TOP TIP

Before giving the deceased's next of kin details to the Tell us Once service you need to get their permission.
