Reoffending and Unresolved Grief – The case for Bereavement Support in Prisons

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Grief Support and the Impact of Death on Society brings together MPs, Peers and sector experts to improve understanding of bereavement and strengthen support for people affected by death. Across society unsupported bereavement is contributing to mental and physical ill-health, job loss, homelessness, relationship breakdown, substance misuse, and crime.

We’re holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the 15th April 2026, followed by short presentations and time for questions including Psychotherapist Mandy Gosling and Prison Chaplain Revd Nicky Grey.

For the APPG to continue its work, MP attendance is essential.

Without enough MPs participating our important awareness will not continue. That is why we’re asking you to invite your MP with an email.

MPs are far more likely to attend when invited by their constituents.

Take two minutes to email your MP using the steps below.

Email header: Please attend: Grief Support APPG & AGM - Reoffending and Unresolved Grief: The case for Bereavement Support in Prisons,15th April, 1:30pm

Dear [MP name]

I’m a constituent in [your postcode/area], and I’m writing to ask you to attend the upcoming AGM and meeting of the APPG for Grief Support and the Impact of Death on Society on:

Reoffending and Unresolved Grief  – The case for Bereavement Support in Prisons.

Wed 15th April, 1:30pm to 1:40pm (AGM), 1:45pm to 2:45pm (APPG Meeting)

Room P, Portcullis House

The meeting will begin with a short AGM (5–10 minutes). If this is all you have time to stay for, the APPG would still be very grateful for your attendance.

Following the AGM, there will be a short presentation and Q&A including Psychotherapist Mandy Gosling and Prison Chaplain Reverend Nicky Grey.

Mandy Gosling will address negative outcomes that can occur due to unsupported bereavement in children and young people, with particular reference to crime, and the meeting will highlight how grief can be made more complex for prisoners. Revd Grey will then present findings from a fresh grief support trial in prisons with indicators that offering structured bereavement support can contribute towards reduced re-offending.

I would be grateful if you could attend and support your constituents in this vital work to strengthen the case for bereavement support.

Yours sincerely,

Thank you - your voice really matters

Thank you for taking a few minutes to contact your MP. It may feel like a small action, but it genuinely makes a difference. MPs are far more likely to attend APPG meetings when they hear directly from constituents about why an issue matters to them.

Your email could help ensure Parliament continues to prioritise bereavement support - in prisons, in services for children and young people, and across society. Greater awareness and evidence-informed policy can mean fewer people falling through the cracks, stronger communities, and potentially reduced reoffending.

Every message sent strengthens our case for bereavement support. Thank you for being part of it.
