Overview: BBC Radio Wales marks AtaLoss’ tenth anniversary with programme on grief and support.

A new BBC Radio Wales programme explores why bereavement support matters, through the experiences of people across Wales and the work of AtaLoss.

Presented by Mal Pope, AtaLoss at 10: Finding Support Through Grief and Bereavement was broadcast on All Things Considered on 25th Oct and is now available to listen to on BBC Sounds.

Mal speaks with AtaLoss founder and CEO Yvonne Tulloch about the sudden death of her husband and the experience that led her to establish AtaLoss to ensure every bereaved person is supported. Yvonne reflects on a continuing challenge: “We’ve got lots of specialist services all across the UK, but people don’t know about them.”

The programme also hears from people who have taken part in The Bereavement Journey® in Pontypridd and Crickhowell, and from course leaders Cathy Richards and Revd Charlotte Rushton. Their experiences show how talking with others can help people make sense of grief, whatever their faith or however long ago the death happened.

Hospital chaplain and CEO of the Parish Trust, Dean Roberts, considers why talking openly about death remains difficult and HMP Edinburgh, prison chaplain Douglas Creighton discusses grief in prison and its links to offending.

Mal opens the programme with a description of grief as “extreme love but with nowhere to go”. The conversations that follow reflect AtaLoss’ work to help bereaved people find support by awareness, signposting and community help.
