MECS provides service users with individual, culturally-sensitive, mother tongue counselling and group support as well as signposting to other organisations to address their pragmatic and practical difficulties. MECS are used to dealing with complex psychological and emotional problems arising from traumatic experiences in countries of origin such as torture, trafficking and persecution as a consequence of civil warfare and conflict. MECS is a no cost service specifically set up to support refugees and asylum-seekers with counselling.

MECS offers an initial assessment to all refugee and asylum seeking referrals in order to understand client’s needs, expectations and whether they are a suitable service for them. Counselling provides a safe, thinking space for clients to explore some emotional responses related to their past experiences and present situation.

Clients are usually offered mother-tongue counselling for up to 12 sessions in many different languages. Mother tongue counselling can currently be provided in the following languages: Amharic, Bengali, Cantonese, French, Hindi, Italian, Kurdish, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Tigrinya, Twi and Yoruba.
